Tropical Flower Care Instruction

General Tropical Flower Care

Congratulations!  You are the happy recipient of fresh, exotic Hawai'i-grown flowers.  To enjoy their beauty and elegance for as long as possible, we have a few tips that will ensure your bouquet has a long life.

*Unpack the flowers immediately.

*Immerse entire stems in water at room temperature for 10 minutes immediately after cutting 1/4"-1" from each stem.  Cut at a 45 degree angle to allow for maximum water absorption and ease of arrangement.

*Be sure the flowers have plenty of water at all times.  Mist flowers with water daily to extend vase life and maintain a fresh appearance.  Change water and trim stems every 3-4 days.

*Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and breezy areas.  Maintain temperature above 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Anthuriums

Unpack immediately and cut off at least 1/2" inch from the bottom of each stem.  Immerse the entire flower, including the stem, in fresh cool (not cold) water for at least 10 minutes.  Arrange as desired.  Repeat the soaking process every 3-4 days.  Anthuriums should be kept with stems in fresh water at room temperature (never below 55 F).  Mist heads with water daily and keep out of direct sunlight, away from heat (i.e., fireplaces) and direct breezes.

Heliconias

Remove leaves from the stem as desired.  Cut off 1" of the stem and immediately place in fresh room temperature water.  To improve the appearance of the bracts, wash them in water with a mild soap and rinse with fresh water.  Do not refrigerate.

Ginger Flowers

Cut off 1" from each stem.  Completely immerse the flower and stem in fresh water at room temperature for 10 minutes.  Do not refrigerate.

Birds of Paradise

Cut off 1" from each stem and immediately place in fresh water at room temperature. To bring out extra flowers, insert your thumb inside the unopened sheath through the open upper part of the sheath.  Gently remove the membrane that separates each flower by cutting it off.  Refrigerate as needed to keep fresh.

Dendrobium Orchids

Cut 1/2" from the bottom of each spray.  Immerse the entire spray, including stem and flowers, in fresh cool tap water for 10 minutes.  Repeat the process every 3-4 days.  Arrange as desired in a container which allows 2" of the stem to be covered in water.  Refrigerate until ready to use.  Mist daily with water and keep away from direct sunlight, heat and breezes.
